2. PLAYER DEVELOPMENT PRIORITIES

Atom football focuses heavily on skill-building and age-appropriate learning.

Players will work on:
 • Proper stance and body position
 • Safe blocking and tackling fundamentals
 • Ball-handling skills
 • Footwork, balance, and agility
 • Understanding basic football rules and gameplay

Our goal is to develop well-rounded young athletes, not specialize them early.

3. SAFETY & CONTACT PROGRESSION

Accepted Answer

Safety is the number one priority in this division.

We follow Football Canada’s Safe Contact standards, including:

• Progressive contact levels introduced only when athletes show readiness
 • No open-field full-speed tackling drills
 • Mandatory certified equipment for all players
 • Weekly equipment checks for fit and safety
 • Immediate removal from play if injury is suspected

Coaches emphasize controlled contact, proper technique, and player confidence at every practice.

4. COACHING & GAME MANAGEMENT RULES

Accepted Answer

Atom coaching supports learning first, competition second.

• One coach allowed on the playing field during play for the season.  The coach shall not run with the play or provide instructions once the quarterback instructs the team to set.  
 • Play-calling is simplified to support understanding and reduce confusion
 • Coaches encourage positive communication and instructional feedback
 • Official rulings prioritize safety, sportsmanship, and learning over strict competition
 • Athletes rotate through multiple positions throughout the season

The emphasis is always on teaching, not winning.

5. FAIR PLAY & PARTICIPATION

Atom is a development division. Every athlete plays.

• 10-play rule in place. 
 • All players receive fair opportunities for playing time
 • Positions rotate so athletes learn multiple roles
 • Teams aim to ensure similar age and skill balance across the field
 • Focus is on teamwork, inclusion, and building confidence

No athlete sits on the bench due to experience level or skill.

6. GAME DAY EXPECTATIONS

Accepted Answer

To make game days smooth and enjoyable for players and families:

• Arrive 45–60 minutes early for warm-up and equipment checks
 • Full equipment must be worn and properly fitted at all times
 • Athletes are expected to listen to coaches and respect referees
 • Parents must support a positive environment, cheering only, no sideline coaching
 • Scores are recorded, but development remains the priority

Sportsmanship is a core expectation for all Spartans players and families.

7. EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

Accepted Answer

All Atom players must have:
 • CSA-approved helmet
 • Youth-sized shoulder pads
 • Mouthguard (mandatory)
 • Cleats (no metal)
 • Proper football pants with pads
 • Team jersey 
 • Optional: gloves, compression wear, performance gear

Coaches and staff perform equipment checks at the start of the season and as needed.

Spartans provide the following to every player at the beginning of each season: 
 • CSA-approved helmet
 • Youth-sized shoulder pads
 • Basic Mouthguard
 • Proper football pants with pads
 • Team jersey

Players are required to provide their own:
 • Cleats (no metal)
 • Mouthguard (although we provide a basic mouthguard, we recommend considering buying your own mouthguard based on fit and preferences)
 • Optional: gloves, compression wear, performance gear

Players are not allowed to play if they do not have their full required equipment, whether that be during a practice or a game.  Please arrive 10-15 minutes earlier than the scheduled start time to give yourself enough time to put your gear on.
