HISTORY OF THE VICTORIA SPARTANS
Four decades of community, character, and championship football.

Our Beginning (Late 1980s)
The Victoria Spartans were founded in the late 1980s by coach and visionary Roy Vollinger, who believed football could be a powerful tool to build confidence, leadership, and resilience in young athletes.
The team trained on the old Velox Rugby fields on Gordon Head Road and played their home games at Royal Athletic Park.

In their first year, the Spartans Midget team became Island Champions.
In their second, they earned the title of Provincial Champions, immediately establishing the Spartans as a program built on discipline, grit, and unity.

Where Our Name Came From
The name “Spartans” was inspired by Roy Vollinger’s favourite film, Spartacus.
Like the heroes of the movie, the team was built on the belief that courage, loyalty, and brotherhood could overcome any obstacle.

Their early all-white uniforms reflected the “good guys” in classic films, a symbol of honour, integrity, and pride.

Growth Through the 1990s
The 1990s marked a decade of remarkable success.
Spartans teams repeatedly advanced to provincial championship games, showcasing the strength of the organization and the quality of its coaching.
